DOWNSTATE - Two Downstate residents died in separate traffic accidents Wednesday and Thursday.

On Wednesday, a 17-year-old Greenwood teen died after her car was struck by a vehicle that allegedly ran a red light, police said.

Delaware State Police spokesman Cpl. Jeffry Oldham said a Plymouth Neon driven by Tori Ferrell, 17, was traveling eastbound on Sussex 40 crossing U.S. 13 near Bridgeville at about 4:45 p.m.

A Ford Expedition driven by John Vallandingham, 21, of Cape May, N.J., was traveling northbound on U.S. 13 and allegedly ran a red light. The vehicle swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid the Neon, but struck the right side of the car and both vehicles traveled off the road. The Expedition rolled over once.

The Ferrell youth was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford where she was pronounced dead. Mr. Vallandingham, his wife and their 8-month-old child were transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, where they were treated for apparent minor injuries.

On Thursday, a 39-year-old man, whose name is being withheld pending family notification, was crossing the southbound lanes of U.S. 13 east of Laurel at about 2:20 a.m. when he was struck and killed.

Delaware State Police spokesman Lt. Joseph P. Aviola Jr. said a Ford Explorer, driven by Christopher Jackson, 36, of Virginia Beach, Va., was traveling southbound in the left lane when the victim ran out in front of the vehicle.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
